5 Tips to Help You Create Your Dream Outdoor Social Area this Spring

Some home improvement jobs are really tempting to put off over winter. And looking after your outside space is one of them. But now that spring’s here it’s time to get to work so you’ll have your dream outdoor social area by the time the warm weather arrives.

There are quite a few things you’ll need to think about before you start your project. Here are 5 tips to help you create your dream outdoor social area this spring.

1. Pick the right flooring

The first thing you’ll need to do is pick the right flooring for your outside space. There are plenty of different types to choose from, so do some research to make sure you get the right one.

If you’re working with a fairly small budget, consider gravel. It can look brilliant, particularly if you colour-coordinate it with the outside of your house. It’s not great for putting furniture on, however, as it can get messy and uneven.

Other types of effective outside flooring include paving and decking. Choose a paving material that works with your colour palette and budget – typical ones are brick, concrete and natural stone. Or consider decking for a different look.

2. Install feature lighting

Feature lighting isn’t essential, but it’s a brilliant way to give your outdoor area a welcoming, cosy feel. Like flooring, there are lots of different types available so you can choose the one that’s right for you.

Battery-powered or solar lights are great if you want something that’s easy to fit, but wired lighting tends to be stronger and more reliable. Post lights, spotlights and ground lights can all look really good – select a type that suits the look you want and the amount of space you have.

If you don’t want to spend too much money, go out and get some outdoor fairy lights. They’re a speedy solution if you’re expecting guests and are easy to put up.

3. Select the best seating

The chances are you’ll need seating to create your dream outdoor social area. To work out what you need, think about how you’re planning on using your space when it’s finished.

For example, if your goal is to host outdoor dinner parties, you’ll need a dining table and chairs. Or if you want somewhere you and your friends or family can get together for a casual drink, you’ll want some benches or sofas with comfy cushions. Be sure to take the rainy British weather into consideration and either get removable cushions or furniture covers.

4. Get some suitable plants

Spring is the perfect time to get planting so your outside space will look good for the warmer months. Don’t be tempted to skip this if gardening isn’t your strong point – it doesn’t have to be time-consuming or difficult.

Try planting lavender or azaleas if you want to keep everything as simple as possible. These plants will add a nice burst of colour to your outdoor area without needing much maintenance. Or try perennials like geraniums if you want flowers that will last for more than one season.

5. Consider bifold doors

Putting in bifold doors can be the perfect way to join your indoor and outdoor spaces together, making the most of both. They can make your home more sociable and practical – you’ll be able to get in and out of your home easily if you’re servings dinner or drinks outside for example.

Bifold doors need a good deal more investment than outside seating and lighting, but can be a great long-term asset to your home.

So don’t be put off by the cold temperatures this year. Start creating your dream outdoor social area this spring so you’ll have it all ready for when the warm weather arrives!
